What We Teach

KAJUKENBO - Emperado Method
Kajukenbo was founded in 1947 at Palamas Settlement in Oahu, Hawaii.  It developed out of a group calling themselves The Black Belt Society.  This group consisted of Black Belts  from various martial arts backgrounds who met to train and learn with each other.  These   men and their contributors are as follows: Professor Adriano Emperado - Kenpo, Professor     Joseph Holck - Jujitsu/Judo, Professor Peter Choo - Korean Karate, Professor Frank Ordonez -Jujitsu, and Professor Clarence Chang Sil Lum - (Shaolin) Gung Fu.  Perseverance in their experimentation yielded ecclectic entries, takedowns, and follow-ups with the ultimate emphasis being on survival.   Since that time Kajukenbo has spanned the globe, and has several branches recognized by the founder, that represent the prolific outbranching from the root system. This creative outbranching continues with Kajukenbo-Estacada, an evolving creation of Sifu Bill Schettino of New York. Simply put, Estacada-Kajukenbo stresses movement and its relation to the tremendous array of lethal techniques presented within the core of the Emperado Method.
Sifu Schettino has taken the sum of his considerable practical experience and combined his reality of combative movement with specific techniques to develop a curriculum that enhances a student's understanding of what it takes to be successful in a violent physical encounter.  Shihan Sciandra has the honor of learning directly under Sifu Schettino. Shihan is a certified  Instructor in Estacada as well as a Third Degree Black Belt in Estacada Kajukenbo.  The Martial Arts Studio is one of the few Kajukenbo schools in New York and the only Estacada Kajukenbo school.

KALI - "Kamut Lihok" translates to hand or body motion. The term is used generally to refer to arts of the Southern Philippines, mostly used outside of the Philippines. Kali is the mother art of the modern Filipino Martial Arts. Kali, Escrima, and Arnis are the terms for the fighting arts of the Philippines. At T.M.A.S. the Kali system we teach is called Sayoc Kali. The Sayoc Kali system emphasizes the correct and effective usage of the blade. Sayoc Kali includes knowledge of how to use a single knife, with a progression to the use of multiple blades, swords, and blunt instruments (sticks) in conjunction with empty-hands training.

Goshin Jujitsu - is simply translated as self-defense. That only describes a portion of the true meaning, and is not a complete translation. GOSHIN means "to protect human life." It doesn't limit this to oneself, but includes all human life. To respect human life and to guide others to the right path is the true nature of goshin jujitsu. The aim of the training should not be abusive or offensive, but should be pointed toward these humanistic qualities. Goshin Jujitsu is the art that was taught to Shihan Steve by Matsumura Sensei (Ninth Degree Black Belt).

Jujitsu- which translates to "the art of tactical flexibility", is actually one of the most effective & potentially destructive martial arts. It is one of the oldest martial arts, dating back over 2500 years to ancient Japan.  It was practiced by the Samurai of the Heian period of Japanese history. Many modern martial arts, such as Aikido, Judo, & Karate originated from Jujitsu.   Students learn throws, counters, holds, chokes & joint locks.  Intermediate/advanced students participate in free fighting.

How do these arts relate?
Children up to 14 years old learn our Jujitsu self-defense system.  Adults have the option to attend any or all systems that are available.  We keep the styles  separate.  Each art has its own requirements and specific belt tests. The idea is that there is no one particular Martial Art that is appropriate for everyone.  At The Martial Arts Studio students have the freedom to do what suits them.

How do I to get started ?
